Steppingstone Lane Bridge Restoration

25 May 2002
More of the bridge remains are excavated

At the previous work party we had excavated the north-east and north-west wing-walls. Only the south-west wing-wall was excavated on this work party, partly because we had other things do and partly because of equipment problems (no surprise there) and tree roots.

The towpath was very sodden (it's not really the towpath, but until we reinstate it where it should be it serves that purpose) so pallets were put down at strategic points to act as duck boards. Then the poles for the warning flags we had promised the horse riders were erected. Part of Shrivenham's Golden Jubilee celebrations was a walk including the canal so we also widened the path with a brush cutter.

The mini-digger seemed to be having problems with one its tracks which made the excavating harder going than expected, but good progress was made with the south-west wing-wall despite the best efforts of some long-dead ash trees. Temperamental water pumps also slowed work down.

Leading away from the bridge there are training wall. These were also partly excavated.

A coping stone from the bridge was also found in excellent condition

Next time we hope to find the fourth - south-eastern - corner of the bridge. Perhaps we'll even manage to start removing the culvert surround.
