I must first apologise for not producing a Wilts & Berks Canal report in the last Parish News. I have been trying to adhere to a very hectic schedule both with my “day job” and my canal interests, causing some things to be put to one side, albeit temporarily. I’ll try not to let it happen again.
The West Vale Branch members have been very busy recently giving talks to The Marcham Society and the Harwell Environment Group in addition to hosting the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust “Open Forum” for members in Watchfield Village Hall. Whilst this is very important in “spreading the word” it has limited the amount of time spent on the more practical aspects of restoration.
There are strong plans in place now for a weekend camp in July where the Branch hosts a team from the Waterways Recovery Group, to make inroads into the restoration at Steppingstone Lane Bridge and the towpath to Station Road. This team of expert volunteers is expected to set the restoration of the bridge forward by a noticeable amount and are most welcome. The team will be accommodated at Watchfield Village Hall.
The most recent work parties have been spent grass cutting and tidying the Canalside Park. This again, whilst essential, is not helping with the restoration of the canal itself. Ideally, we would like to encourage more local people to assist in this activity to free up work party time to actual restoration. It is worth noting that later this year, when we complete the Lease arrangements for Savernake Break and the Canal, we will need more environmental type assistance than ever.
