West Vale Branch
Shrivenham, Watchfield and Bourton Parish Magazine Report
September 2002

We have had a month of good news on several fronts. At Steppingstone Lane Bridge, we were given the formal go ahead for the closure of the old bridge route. This was carried out on Saturday 27th July when we installed a gate across the Bourton end and a post-and-rail fence at the Shrivenham end. Unfortunately time overtook us on the Saturday and we did not complete the footpath route. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused to the Sunday morning users, but are pleased to report that all was rectified by tea time on the Sunday. Also the dry weather enabled the team, a week later, to move a portable building/shelter to the site to be used by restorers to have their food and shelter from the weather. It will not be used to store tools etc.

Other good news included the granting of Planning Permission for the rebuilding of a culvert at Tuckmill Brook to allow the canal to cross this feeder to the College lakes again. Also we have been granted “Change of Use” from Agricultural to Recreational and Liesure Use for the section of canal between the Canalside Park and Savernake Brake, which will enable a footpath to be installed at some future time.

The team has also been out and about grass cutting in both the park and on the towpaths. The changeable weather has really promoted growth everywhere and we do struggle sometimes just to keep up with it. (plug---any help will be appreciated!)

For more information or to volunteer assistance please come along to one of our meetings held in the Shrivenham Bowls Club, Martens Road, on the second Wednesday of every month at 8 p.m. You will be made very welcome.
