West Vale Branch
Shrivenham, Watchfield and Bourton Parish Magazine Report
March 2002

We have been busy at Steppingstone Lane Bridge again this month with the moving of our “Blue Box” steel container from the field above the work-site to the site itself. This was no mean feat with only four volunteers available on the work party. But the task was completed on the day and we even managed to put down some hard core at the entrance to the container to reduce the muddy area. All this work did chew up the area a little but we expect to smooth this out before surfacing the diversion.

We intend to hold a second work party on the weekend of the 2nd March to lay the membrane and hardcore on the dam to complete the diversion surfacing. We also, time permitting, expect to start putting up the diversion fencing. It is hoped that we can hold the site meeting to agree on the opening of the diversion towards the end of March.

Spring is “just around the corner” and we are planning to begin our seasons grass cutting and hedge trimming towards the end of March, once the evenings become lighter and the ground dries out a little. We are always looking for assistance in this activity and would welcome anyone prepared to give a little time. The main area will be the Canalside Park, but the canal bank from Station Road to Tuckmill Brook also needs attention.

For more information or to volunteer assistance please come along to one of our meetings held in the Shrivenham Bowls Club, Martens Road, on the second Wednesday of every month at 8 p.m. You will be made very welcome. Alternatively, ask any of the volunteers that you see working on the canal or park, they will be more than pleased to stop and talk! For those with a computer and Internet access please visit our Branch Web Site at www.westvalecanal.fsnet.co.uk, I am sure that you will find it interesting.
